our love is a terrible thing;

Really looking forward to some old-school punk rock at Glasgow’s Stereo on Thursday night, not least because the upcoming bank holiday weekend means I’ll have the next day off work. Richard Baccus was one of Jesse Malin’s bandmates back in their D-Generation days, and the gig is being promoted by my dear Myspace friends Shock and Awe (who are on the bill themselves the next night in Edinburgh, a show I’d love to go to if I wasn’t already seeing the Twilight Sad that night).

I wonder, is it hypocritical to be looking forward to Easter weekend now that I have finally, irrevocably decided that the Catholic Church in Scotland can go fuck themselves in the arse? A throwaway line that was supposed to indicate my disgust and contempt for Bishop Devine’s comments earlier in the week, but which I suppose is an appropriate, if playground level, response given the subject matter. Can you imagine any other public figure getting away with calling the gay rights lobby “a giant conspiracy” without at least an apology being called for, if not a resignation? Since the good Bishop seems to be unaware that homosexuals were sent to concentration camps (cheers Clairwil for the link), and therefore would appear to have something of a case for attending a Holocaust memorial, I’d say the work of gay rights activists in this country is just as necessary now as it has ever been. Devine thinks it’s disgraceful that Sir Ian McKellen was formally honoured for his work in this area when only a hundred years ago Oscar Wilde was sent to prison for homosexual acts. I think it’s a disgrace that somebody so dogmatic, so lacking in understanding, can call himself a Christian.

Freedom of expression is a wonderful thing. I intend to exercise mine by not setting foot in a Catholic church in Scotland again, regardless of how difficult that might make things with various family members.

It looks like a nice day outside. I should really get out and take advantage of my Sunday, rather than sit around the house and mope. Any ideas?
