In which your blogger attempts, at great inconvenience, to sample every commercially-available dessert in the Greater Glasgow area – and sometimes elsewhere – so you don’t have to.

As I look through my ever-increasing collection of draft posts, it strikes me that either it has been far too long since I last reviewed a cake place or alternatively I eat so much cake I couldn’t possibly write about them all. Either is a genuine possibility, I suppose. Anyway, at the end of last month I took a little overnight trip to Belfast to see Ryan Adams with my friend Kerrie. As well as introducing me to the Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar that bears the same name she has often used online, and helping me find a pocketwatch-onna-chain on just the right side of “twee hipster poseur” at her favourite hangout Stray Jewellery, there was just enough time for the now-obligatory cake date at her ‘local’, the Little Cupcake Cafe just behind City Hall.

And look! I even got me a Las on a completely coincidental trip home from Texas!

The Little Cupcake Cafe isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel or anything, and to be honest it doesn’t need to. In keeping with its city centre location it offers your typical office lunchtime fayre alongside a selection of daily-baked treats – and, if I remember correctly, there might be some sort of baked goods offer for everyday diners? All enough to make me wish we had something similar in the centre of Glasgow. As well as the cupcakes the Cafe also provides a selection of home baking (such as the delicious chocolate chip shortbread pictured on my tray, right below, for the trip home) and a well-stocked ice cream counter.

I struggled with the choice of the slightly more unusual Crunchie flavour (which thankfully Kerrie opted for for the purposes of rigorous scientific testing Instagrammin’ for the folks back home) and the traditional raspberry, and while mine was decent enough with a delicious jammie centre I probably would have fared better by being a little more adventurous. Regardless, for cupcakes without the ridiculous designer price tag, cosy surroundings and great company I have no complaints.
