Funny thing, life. This time last year you couldn’t have paid me to put on another gig as long as I lived. But had you told me, this time last year, that I’d be buying a house in the very near future I’d have laughed in your face.
Besides, lovely Ben Marwood asked so, so nicely. And I was starting to suspect the only way I could get him to play Glasgow was to put it on myself, which is exactly what I intend to do, come 17th April.
Hitting the road in the first half of 2014 to put second album Back Down to bed, Reading-based songwriter Ben Marwood adds a poetic twist to intricate folk; lyrics that swerve and tumble over one another, switching from the gravely serious love letters to the tongue-in-cheek swipes at life itself.
Originally ploughing a lone, DIY furrow, Marwood was finally snapped up by London label Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Chris T-T, Jamie Lenman) late in 2010, before releasing two albums in the next three years. After attention from BBC Radio 1 & 2, Xfm, Rocksound and Kerrang! amongst others, 2013 saw Marwood tour the USA with Frank Turner and Epitaph’s Off With Their Heads, and travel the UK with some of the best underground talent, playing shows alongside fellow Xtra Milers Jim Lockey, Oxygen Thief, Retrospective Soundtrack Players, Chris T-T and Franz Nicolay on the way.
Be warned: recent single ‘Under Lock and Key’ had a strong hint of murder.
We’re heading southside for this one, to the lovely Glad Cafe; and bringing Yorkshire’s Pip Mountjoy and Armellodie Records own Chris Devotion (minus his Expectations) along for the ride. This is the only Scottish date of a final round to see off Back Down, so you ought to get yourself along.
