Deer Tick are one of those bands that I can’t bring myself to love for really spurious, girly reasons. Like, today I went on Google Images to try and find a picture that I could use at the top of this post, and I swear to god guys – YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT. I kinda get the impression that this Rhode Island quintet relish the association though, particularly given that every time a track of theirs pops up on shuffle I catch myself looking up who it’s by and reminding myself to look them up properly. Albeit using really specific search terms.
The appearance of new single “The Rock”, the first preview of the band’s upcoming fifth album Negativity, is as good a reason as any. Oh, the video – a single-shot close-up of who I can only assume is band frontman John McCauley, while words from the song appear on the screen – is as creepy as you would expect, but it’s a devious little hookworm of a twisted break-up song. The album’s out on Partisan Records at the end of September – the day before a UK album launch at London’s Borderline.
