out and about: tea on the green with john lewis;

I gotta be honest: hearing John Lewis would be opening a pop-up afternoon tea oasis in the centre of Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games was enough to pique my interest, afternoon tea being something of a specialist subject of mine (and their Glasgow store being pretty good at cake in general). It was only on the second reading of their news release that I realised exactly how much of an oasis the whole idea was…

‘Tea on the Green’ is a “pop-up garden tea house” from the Games’ official department store provider, and will actually be offering free afternoon tea and a relaxing place to watch all the sporting action to Glasgow punters throughout the competition (24th July – 3rd August). The name is a little misleading – it’ll actually be located a little more centrally, in Royal Exchange Square – but Tea on the Green plans to take advantage of its location in the heart of Glasgow’s cultural and artistic hub by showcasing some very special art installations as well as screening big-screen sport.

“At John Lewis, we always aim to bring unique and enjoyable experiences to our customers and ‘Tea on the Green’ will allow customers in the city centre to soak up the spirit of the Games,” said Lindsay Ironside, operations manager at the Glasgow store. “We are hugely honoured to be a part of the XX Commonwealth Games and want to celebrate by bringing something really special to the people of Glasgow.”

I suspect she’s right there: John Lewis has commissioned designer Billie Achilleos to create two Games-inspired art installations for display at Tea on the Green. Her commissions, which depict a high-jumper and a cyclist, are apparently made entirely out of everyday household items.

MOAR LYG:  new music, er, tuesdays: the st vincent edition;

Bookings to take tea “on the Green” are open now, although there will be a limited number of places available each time slot for those who rock up on the day. I’ve got my bid in for a luxurious working lunch with a pal from the office, so fingers crossed I’ll see you there…
