“The Start” – a short documentary about the making of Mahoney and the Moment’s debut album.

They’re from New York, like Bruce Springsteen and put together a limited “party bag edition” of their debut album complete with sweeties, action figures and a balloon. Yes, there is plenty to like about Mahoney and the Moment, a gorgeously evocative band name which is actually an amalgamation of the duo’s (Emily and Steve) own surnames.

Currently based in London, the duo plan to build up an audience this side of the pond over the next few months – keep an eye on their Facebook page for dates and details. Steve Mahoney answers a few questions below.

Who’s in the band and how did you get together?
The band was formed by Emily & I at the beginning of 2011 in New York: it was sparked by performing on each other’s solo albums in 2010. I had originally signed up Emily to perform in a folk competition I was organising.

Three words to describe your sound…
Melodic, romantic and fun!

What influences you?
We are influenced to write and perform by relationships, city life, travel, struggles, lots of things – also retro themes and styles. Some particular musical influences are Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Iron & Wine…

What releases/shows do you have planned at the moment?
We’ll be laying down our next album in London in July and we have so many new songs there may be an EP as well! In the meantime we have some London shows and will be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August – check our Facebook page for more updates and details.

And what are you listening to at the moment?
We are currently listening to Norah Jones’ new album Little Broken Hearts, which is probably my favourite of the year so far. Also really liked Bruce Springsteen’s latest album and friends of ours, Paul Cook & The Chronicles, have a great new record out.
