that’s why modern radio is a-ok with me: last month’s mix, august 2009;

A week or so ago, I had the ridiculously self-referential idea to turn this month’s mix into a tribute to my upcoming American adventure. Miscellaneous other commitments (preparations, procrastinating packing in favour of the Pub Quiz app on my iPhone, new writing commitments elsewhere and, you know, my job) might have prevented me from following through with that plan, but there are a few inspired selections mixed in with the usual bits and pieces which have caught my attention this month.

Why Modern Radio is a-OK: last month’s mix, August 2009
1. Simon & Garfunkel: “America”
2. Billy Bragg: “I Almost Killed You”
3. Jason Anderson: “July 4, 2004”
4. Emmy the Great: “Absentee”
5. Bettye LaVette: “Streets of Philadelphia”
6. Silver Jews: “Tennessee”
7. Roman Candle: “Why Modern Radio Is A-OK”
8. Bruce Springsteen: “Frankie”
9. Yim Yames: “All Things Must Pass”
10. Portland Cello Project (ft. Justin Power): “Hungry Liars”
11. Leona Naess: “The Lipstick Song”

14. Malcolm Middleton: “Kiss At The Station”
15. Amanda Palmer: “I Google You” [live]

Aw, you may wanna throw in something from The Band in there i.e. The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. 🙂

Jason Anderson! I saw him at a tiny show put together for a friend’s birthday last year! It was so much fun, such great energy. My friend, Leigh, is good friends with him. Really nice guy.

Oh and track 9 – sounds like Fleet Foxes…

BTW, found your old New Adventures in Hi Fi cassette in my dad’s loft the other week… let us raise a glass to our dear friend Nostalgia!

Aw, yay! I hope you gave it a listen 🙂

Track 9 is the guy from My Morning Jacket, he’s got a whole George Harrison tribute album coming out soon which sounds interesting x
