list season starts early: last year’s month’s mix january 2008;

It does one good to get “worst film of 2008” out of the way early, although I suppose as a 2007 release I Am Legend doesn’t really count. It’s one I might have to write about later, if only to get its creepiness and despair out of my system, but it doesn’t do one any good to dwell on these things on a Sunday night.

So, to take my mind off it, I’m starting this one early. One of my “101 things [to achieve] in 1001 days” is to document each month with a mix CD, and I figure if I’m making one anyway I may as well share. These mixes may have a theme but more likely they’ll be a mish-mash of songs old and new I’ve enjoyed in a given month. They might be representative of films (I’m Not There is well represented in this instance, with tracks from both Bob Dylan himself as well as Marcus Carl Franklin from the soundtrack; and that Monkees cover from Stranger Than Fiction which we re-watched quite recently makes an appearance), shows (not this time, sadly) or new albums (MARAH!). And for January, there’s at least one song that pushed my buttons in 2007 which I couldn’t put on my end of year mixes since it was released the year before.

This will, unless bandwidth prevents it, be up until replaced next month.

I really enjoyed I Am Legend! First Hollywood film I’ve seen in ages. I just love a good apocalypse.

Ace, thanks! esp for the broken records, seen them a couple of times recently and liked but didn’t actually have any of their songs.

so, i was really, really clamoring to find out that song from the stranger than fiction soundtrack. something told me to ask you, but it had just slipped my mind. that’s probably my favorite song from the movie, save “my mathematical mind.”

Sunny G! When we first heard it, Jason got very excited because he thought it was a 1990’s style pirate radio. Then he started seeing adverts for it and was a little disappointed. Love it though – anything’s better than Clyde 1, surely…?

Nine: I think i’m one of those wusses who needs there to be a plucky band of survivors working together. Every time I’ve slagged off the film I’ve mentioned you liked it though, just in the interests of fullness!

sarah: Sorry, I didn’t realise you were struggling with the iTunes files too! I’d just been too lazy to reset my import preferences when I reinstalled the software on my new laptop. You can convert .aac files to .mp3s in iTunes by right-clicking on them and selecting the correct option.

Jonic: Thank you, I will bear that in mind. I tend to have space for a couple of mixes, but I was trying to upload another file last month and everything went horribly wrong so I deleted the music directory in its entirety.

Helen: Hopefully I’ll get a chance to see them soon, Fi saw them supporting The Twilight Sad and said they were awesome.

douglas: It is. SO. GOOD. We Googled it during the movie (although it helped that Jay knew the original.

Amy: I only actually listen to Radio Switchback, Glasgow’s rootin’est, tootin’est, party, but I’m all for any station that will give my mates a show πŸ˜€

You know that I supported Wreckless Eric back in oooh, March 2003 it must have been. A Bloody Mary’s set, just me on fiddle and tamborine, and Ryan on vocals and guitar. We did a kickass cover of “Love Will Tear us Apart” as well as all the old favourites too.

Saw I’m Not There on saturday. Amazing, but deeply unsettling.

My end of month diary mix will be coming, well, at the end of the month.

I Am Legend was just the latter!

  10. January 22, 2008 / 2:20 am

Ha! For all I know I could be the only person on the planet who liked the film. I haven’t compared notes with anybody else as yet, other than Jay – my Jay, obvi – who I saw it with. We discussed it at great length afterwards, picking apart the plot holes and theorising about how Will Smith could have handled things differently.

But re your latest post: I don’t generally care for scary things, either! No roller coasters, no horror films. ANd no zombies – it’s purely the draw of the apocalypse here. And that’s because I like to sit there and imagine what I would do if I was in that situation. Which would, of course, be to steal a car and head for the hills.
